CHASING GLADIUS MINI S underwater drone for fishing on a boat deck on a misty lake

Best Underwater Drone for Fishing 2026: ROV vs Fishing Camera

The best underwater drone for fishing for most anglers is the CHASING GLADIUS MINI S. It is rated to 100 m (328 ft), packs a 4K camera with two 1,200-lumen lights, and is light enough at about 2.7 kg to launch from a boat, dock or kayak. If you run charters or fish deep offshore structure in current, step up to the eight-thruster CHASING M2 S. And if you mainly want to look straight down a hole in the ice or under your own boat, a drop camera like the CHASING CanFish CF1 does that job for a fraction of the cost. An underwater drone will not catch fish for you, but it shows you what sonar can only suggest: the actual structure, the bait and whether fish are holding there.

Is an underwater drone worth it for fishing?

It is worth it if you fish the same water often and lose time guessing. A fish finder tells you something is down there. A tethered drone lets you drive over to it and look. That helps with:

  • Where to anchor. Check whether a sonar mark is a brush pile, a rock ledge or a weed edge before you drop the anchor on it.
  • What the fish are eating. Seeing bait schools and their size helps you choose lure size and color.
  • Lost gear and snags. A drone with a grabber claw can help recover light items, within the claw's rated limits.

It is probably not worth it if you fish a different lake every weekend from shore, or if your water is so murky that visibility is under a couple of feet most of the year. Cameras need some clarity, and lights only help so much in stained water.

Underwater drone vs fishing camera vs fish finder: what is the difference?

These three tools get lumped together, but they solve different problems.

Fish finder (sonar) Drop fishing camera Underwater drone (ROV)
What you get Echoes and depth readings Live video where you lower it Live video wherever you drive it
Movement Moves with the boat Straight down on a cable Propelled by thrusters
Works in murky water Yes Limited Limited, lights help at close range
Ice fishing Yes Yes, through the hole Not practical through a standard hole

The short version: sonar finds the spot, a drop camera confirms what is directly below you, and a drone lets you explore the whole area around the boat without moving it.

Which underwater drones work best for fishing?

For fishing, three specs matter most: how well the drone holds position in current, how much light it carries for deeper or stained water, and how easy it is to launch and recover from a small boat. Here is how the CHASING models we carry compare, using the manufacturer's published figures.

Which one should you buy for your kind of fishing?

Bass, walleye and panfish on lakes

The GLADIUS MINI S. Most freshwater structure sits well inside its 100 m rating, and the five-thruster layout handles calm to light-current water. The 100 m tether is usually enough; choose 200 m only if you want to cover a wide area from one anchor spot.

Kayak fishing

Also the GLADIUS MINI S, because weight and space decide everything on a kayak. At around 6 lb for the vehicle, it is the only one of the three that is comfortable to launch and recover while seated.

Inshore and offshore saltwater, charters and guides

The M2 S. Eight thrusters let it hold a stable position against current while you study a wreck, a reef edge or a bridge piling, and 4,000 lumens of light help when you work deeper. The replaceable battery means a charter can swap packs between clients instead of waiting on a charge.

The M2 PRO, rated to 150 m, is built for commercial and research work. For fishing alone it is more machine than you need.

Ice fishing

Choose the CanFish CF1. CHASING lists the GLADIUS MINI S at 400 x 226 x 145 mm, which is wider than a typical 8 inch auger hole, so a drone is not a practical through-the-ice tool. A drop camera is.

How do you use an underwater drone for fishing without spooking fish?

  1. Scout first, fish second. Run the drone over a spot, then pull it in before you start casting. Lines and a tether in the same water tangle fast.
  2. Approach slowly. Thruster noise and sudden movement can push fish off structure. Ease in and let the camera's 150 degree field of view do the work.
  3. Use lights sparingly. In clear, shallow water you often do not need them. Save them for depth, shade and stained water.
  4. Manage the tether. Keep it clear of the motor, anchor line and other anglers. A powered tether reel makes recovery much faster on M2 series drones.
  5. Rinse after saltwater. Fresh water on the vehicle, tether and connectors after every saltwater trip, then dry fully before storage.

Depth, tether length and budget are covered in more detail in our guide on how to choose an underwater drone.

Frequently asked questions

Can an underwater drone help you catch more fish?

Indirectly. It does not attract or catch fish, but it shows you which structure is holding fish and bait, so you spend more time casting at productive water and less time guessing.

Will an underwater drone scare fish away?

It can if you drive it in fast with bright lights. A slow, steady approach is less likely to disturb them. Move slowly, keep some distance and dim the lights when visibility allows.

Can you use an underwater drone from a kayak?

Yes, a compact model like the GLADIUS MINI S is the practical choice. Secure the reel and controller, launch on the side away from your paddle stroke, and recover it before you move.

How deep does a fishing drone need to go?

Much freshwater fishing happens shallower than 15 m (about 50 ft), and a 100 m rating covers nearly all recreational fishing, including much offshore structure. Depth rating is a limit, not a target, so there is no need to pay for 150 m for fishing alone.

Is it legal to use an underwater drone while fishing?

Rules on electronic fishing aids vary by state, waterway and tournament, and some marinas, harbors and protected areas restrict ROV use. Check your state wildlife agency's current regulations and any tournament rules before you deploy one.

What is the difference between an underwater drone and a fishing camera?

A fishing camera hangs on a cable and shows what is directly below the line. An underwater drone has thrusters, so you can steer it along a weed edge, around a piling or across a reef while watching live video.
