Robot Vacuums and Floor Care

How to Choose a Robot Vacuum

  • Start with your floors. Hard floor throughout is the easy case and almost any model handles it. Mixed carpet and hard floor is where mop lifting and carpet detection matter, because the machine has to raise the mop before it crosses a rug.
  • Suction is measured in Pa, and more is not always the point. Models here run from roughly 8,000 Pa to 25,000 Pa. Higher figures help on deep pile carpet and embedded pet hair. On hard floors, brush design and edge reach usually matter more than the headline number.
  • Decide how much you want to do yourself. An auto-empty dock moves emptying from every run to every few weeks. Docks that also wash and dry the mop pad, refill clean water and drain dirty water remove nearly every manual step. Plumbed docks need a water connection.
  • Pet households should look at anti-tangle. Long hair wrapping the brush roll is the most common complaint with any robot vacuum. The dual anti-tangle systems on newer Roborock models are aimed straight at that.
  • Navigation decides how it copes with clutter. LiDAR builds an accurate map and works in the dark. Camera-based obstacle avoidance is what keeps a machine away from cables, socks and pet mess. Most capable models now use both.
  • Check the product page. Suction, dock type, mop system, run time and app features vary by model and the lineup changes often. Every figure that matters is listed on the individual product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a robot vacuum and a robot vacuum and mop?

A robot vacuum only picks up dry debris. A vacuum and mop adds a water tank and either a flat pad or a spinning or rolling mop head, so it damp mops hard floors in the same pass. Most models in this collection do both.

Do robot vacuums empty themselves?

Models with an auto-empty dock do. The robot returns to the base and the base pulls debris into a larger bag or bin. Models without a dock need their onboard bin emptied by hand, usually every one to three runs.

How much suction do I actually need?

For hard floors and light pet hair, the lower end of the range is generally enough. For deep pile carpet or heavy shedding, higher suction makes a noticeable difference. Check the rating on each product page.

Will it get stuck on cords and pet hair?

Cables are the most common cause of a stalled run, which is why obstacle avoidance matters. For hair, look for an anti-tangle brush design. No system is completely immune, but it is the difference between clearing the brush weekly and rarely.

Can one handle both carpet and hard floor?

Yes. Models with carpet detection raise the mop and often increase suction when they cross onto carpet, then lower it again on hard floor. This behaviour varies by model, so confirm it on the product page.

Do I need a LiDAR model?

LiDAR maps the home accurately, lets you set no-go zones and clean individual rooms, and works in the dark. If you want scheduled, room-by-room cleaning without supervision, it is worth having.
